Ideally Efficient Irreversible Molecular Gears

چکیده

Typical man-made locomotive devices use reversible gears, as cranks, for transforming reciprocating motion into directed one. Such gears are holo-nomic and have the transduction efficiency of unity. On the other hand, a typical gear of molecular motors is a ratchet rectifier, which is irreversible. We discuss what properties of rectifier mostly influence the transduction efficiency and show that an apliance which locks under backwards force can achieve the energetic efficiency of unity, without approaching reversibility. A prototype device based on ratchet principle is discussed.

Scalable, Time-Responsive, Digital, Energy-Efficient Molecular Circuits Using DNA Strand Displacement

We propose a novel theoretical biomolecular design to implement any Boolean circuit using the mechanism of DNA strand displacement. The design is scalable: all species of DNA strands can in principle be mixed and prepared in a single test tube, rather than requiring separate purification of each species, which is a barrier to large-scale synthesis. The design is timeresponsive: the concentratio...

A Comparative Study of Tooth Wear, Mechanical Power Losses and Efficiency in Normal and High Contact Ratio Asymmetric Spur Gears

The surface tooth wear which occurs at the gear contact region due to inadequate contact strength of the tooth is one of the predominant modes of gear failures. Currently, higher contact ratio spur gears are increasingly used in power transmission applications such as aircraft, wind turbine, automobiles and compact tracked vehicles due to their high load carrying capacity.  In this work, the di...

Application of structural principles to the design of triptycene-based molecular gears with parallel axes

This perspective discusses the important aspects of the design of molecular gear systems based on triptycene. Molecular systems are categorized into three classes according to the orientation of the gear axes: i) bent (bevel gears), ii) linear, and ii) parallel (spur gears). To date, no examples of molecular gears in which the axes of rotation lie in parallel have been reported; correspondingly...

Molecular gears: a pair of DNA circles continuously rolls against each other.

A pair of DNA nanocircles has been constructed to model gears. The nanogears can move against each other continuously. Each gear consists of a DNA duplex circle and three single-stranded teeth. The teeth on the two gears are brought together by linker strands, which are complementary to the gear teeth. The teeth are separated from each other by removal of the linker strands with a strand displa...

Molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics analysis of Drexler – Merkle gears and neon pump ∗

Over the past two years at the Materials and Process Simulation Center, we have been developing simulation approaches for studying the molecular nanomachine designs pioneered by Drexler and Merkle. These nanomachine designs, such as planetary gears and neon pump, are described with atomistic details and involve up to 10 000 atoms. With the Dreiding and universal force fields, we have optimized ...
